This is how Ninja ranking works.
Genin: Genin are the first rank in the ranking system. They are the weakest and only receive D or C ranked missions. These missions are more like community service or escorts. These ninja are fresh out of the academy and know only basic jutsu.
Chunin: Chunin are more experienced ninjas. They know rather advanced jutsu and are able to take on missions that are rather dangerous. They are able to take on C and B ranked missions. Genin become Chunin by taking the Chunin exams (Which are held every month.)
Jounin: Jounin are elite ninja that take on extremely dangerous missions. The jutsu they know are very advanced and the missions they take are A and S ranked. They are also capable of running a group of Genin ninja. They become their Sensei.
Sannin: Sannin are ninja with skills compared to the Kage of their land. Only three exist so far. (Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru). These ninja are a force to reckoned with, and are known through out the world of Naruto.
Kage: Kages are leaders of their village. They know over 1000 jutsu(Not required) and challenging one would be suicide. Each village has their own kage. Some villages refer to their Kage as Lord.
ANBU: The ANBU are basically like the police. They patrol their village and arrest ninjas that commit crime. They also track Missing-nin. Their strength is comparible to that of a Jounin.
Missing-nin: Missing-nin, or Rogue Ninjas are Shinobi that have run away from their village. they are considered a threat, since they may holdi nformation of their village. ANBU track them down in order to kill them or bring them back to the village. It is unknown what rank Missing-nin belong in, since they dont really have one. Their strength could range from Genin to Kage.
*I did not include Academy student, because Academy students would kind of waste space in the forum. Also, just because some ranks say which missions you can take doesn't mean you have to take them. If you wish to take a higher ranked mission you may, but you will suffer the likely risk of failing. Also, just because certain ranks are stronger than others, doesn't mean that rank will beat the lowest one. It is possible for a Genin to beat a Jounin.*
